HealthThe job of spying caused a large toll on the psychological mind. Many spies were haunted with fear of getting caught and paranoia constantly. This effected many spies' health, including Robert Townsend. Townsend, code name Samuel Culper (C.), struggled with paranoia. Benjamin Tallmadge wrote about his concern for Townsend in one of his letters, "such an excessive fright and so great a turbulence of passions so wrought on poor C. that he has hardly been in tolerable health since" (6).
