Enoch CrosbyEnoch Crosby was born in Connecticut and was a shoemaker before his revolutionary job as a continental spy (1). Crosby was hired as a continental spy by John Jay when he was mistaken for a loyalist and invited to a loyalist militiamen meeting (2). To solidify Crosby's new identity, Jay arranged a fake arrest of Crosby and a fake escape (3). Crosby was the first spy to work in counterintelligence (4). Crosby assumed the identity of an escaped loyalist and replayed information back to the American army (5). Crosby's employment as a spy was only known by a few, not even his parents were not aware of his new job and viewed him as a traitor (6).
